In this sector you can view all our jobs in retail banking.

Many large banking institutions do business and carry on transactions with other banks and large corporations. These banks also often have retail sides, which require dealing directly with consumers, or the man on the street.

This usually implies branches on the high street, but retail banking is increasingly taking place online and you can now find jobs in retail banking outside the branches. Current accounts, savings accounts, debit/credit cards, mortgages, online banking and personal loans all fall under retail banking, as do general insurance services like household and car insurance.

Retail banking can also include wealth management services, but rather than advising high earners on investments, this usually involves helping less affluent people make the most of their money. Financial planning services offer savings and investment advice, usually with the goal of helping people secure a comfortable retirement.

Junior bankers working in actual branches can expect to handle customer queries and complaints in person. They assist customers at the counter within the branch and identify suitable products and services to recommend. They are also expected to actively sell these products and deal with necessary administrative functions such as opening or closing accounts, changing customer details or setting up standing orders.

Some of these support functions are also possible over the telephone, so retail banks recruit large numbers of people to staff their customer service call centres.

Graduates are a growing target of retail banking recruitment. If they begin work in the branches, they can be fast-tracked to managerial positions. After completing a two-year training programme learning about the financial products available and developing skills in leadership and customer service, candidates are then put forward to manage a branch or lead a sales function.

There are also many other job possibilities in retail banking aside from these traditional careers.

Banks recruit product managers and product developers to develop and improve the services they offer customers, whether those include online or mobile banking, credit cards or insurance offerings. Inherent with these products are marketing jobs, which identify demand for particular products or services and work on promotional campaigns to take advantage of trends. The primary term for these roles is 'customer propositions'.

Retail banking also offers jobs in operations management, including roles for business analysts, change managers or project managers. These people are responsible for working on operational efficiencies (including downsizing strategies), running the bank's systems and processes, diversifying its product offerings, and finally progressing and optimising business operations across finance, risk and technology functions.

Risk is another important function of retail banking. This includes risk at the group level - with jobs such as credit, operational and market risk managers - along with professionals who advise on whether to issue personal loans and mortgages. Fraud prevention jobs are also an important component in retail banks' risk divisions, whether these require protecting customers' personal information, anti-money laundering (AML) roles or jobs preventing bribery and corruption.
